WECA IS FAILING

Article for the Farrington Gurney Parish Journal, May/June 2024

At this time of year, my constituents have been receiving their Council Tax demands and the Council Tax has gone up by a whopping 4.9%. This money funds a variety of Council services and some of it goes off to the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) by means of a transport levy.

However WECA is funded, whether from central taxation or from your Council Tax, it has a duty to spend money properly and is failing to do so. It has recently received a letter form the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, saying that a formal ‘Best Value Notice’ is being issued. This is only done when the Government thinks Councils, Local Authorities or Devolved Authorities are squandering your money.

As you know, I never thought we should have the West of England Combined Authority and think it should be abolished, the money saved and your taxes cut. Nonetheless, if we do have it, there is a duty for it to spend money properly, not on vanity schemes like free bus travel in the month of your birthday.
