THE STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT

The Farrington Gurney Parish Journal, May/June 2022

The State Opening of Parliament will take place on 10th May 2022 and marks the formal start of the parliamentary year. It is the only regular occasion which unites the three elements of legislature – the House of Lords, the House of Commons and The Queen – together as the Crown in Parliament.

The State Opening marks the beginning of the parliamentary session. Its main purpose is to open Parliament and, in the Queen’s Speech, outline the Government’s proposed policies and legislation for the coming parliamentary session, including its plans to grow our economy, cut the cost of living, make our streets safer and clear the Covid backlogs. Bills which will be ‘carried over’ into the next session include the Online Safety Bill and the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill, amongst others.  In my role as Minister for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiencies I will be responsible for bringing forward a Procurement Bill and a Brexit Freedoms Bill.
