The Somerset Guardian, 23rd January 2019

This year, Somer Valley FM is celebrating its tenth anniversary.  What started out as a classroom project at Somervale School has turned into an award-winning radio station. The station has just obtained its third licence, securing FM transmission until 2024.

The project was led from the beginning by Dom Chambers, a tireless enthusiast with a professional media background. The training that he has provided to both classrooms and the station has ensured that Somer Valley FM broadcasts reliable media that advocates the locality. Moreover, the station not only provides an audience for voices less heard on other networks but it also offers the skills for people to learn how to produce radio.

Everybody who broadcasts on the radio station is a volunteer. Over forty people contribute to the weekly schedule covering local news and sports, What’s On, Arts, Heritage, Culture. It is particularly well-known for showcasing local and regional music talent that perhaps would not otherwise be heard.

Somer Valley FM has been named Radio Academy South West Station of the Year 2013 and at the Community Radio Awards 2018 it received Gold for Community Development Project of the Year with its Media Education Training & Skills (METS) programme. In August 2018, the station was one of forty-eight businesses in the United Kingdom (UK) to be honoured with a Princess Royal Training Award and an additional commendation, an event that is organised by City & Guilds.

Somer Valley FM is another excellent example of community spirit that inspires, teaches and entertains. The station – and Dom – should be enormously proud of all the accolades that it has deservedly received and look forward to an equally prosperous future.
