PHONE SCAMS

The Farrington Gurney Parish Journal, September/October 2023

Recently I have been contacted by Age UK in respect of advice to give to constituents about phone scams.

Age UK have an excellent guide which you can find online at: www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/money-legal/scams-fraud/phone-scams/ and I would encourage people to share their advice with friends and family.

Common types of phone scams include bank scams undercover police scams, computer or mobile phone repair scams, HMRC scams, council tax scams, compensation calls, texts with fake links etc. The important thing to remember is that even though they seem to know your basic details this does not mean that they are legitimate.

Advice from Age UK includes saying no if you are asked for your PIN, reporting text scams to 7726, using an answerphone to screen your calls, getting caller ID so that you can see who is calling you, using call blocking services, joining the Telephone Preference Service to reduce the number of cold callers and calling the company that your potential scammer says that they are calling from.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance: jacob.reesmogg.mp@parliament.uk.
