LEVELLING UP THE COUNTRY
The Midsomer Norton & Radstock Journal, 5th February 2020
Last Friday, the moment long-awaited finally happened. The United Kingdom left the European Union. As promised in the General Election campaign, we have Got Brexit Done. However, as the Prime Minister said in his speech, this is not an end but a beginning. This is the moment when we begin to unite and level up.
The Prime Minister chose to mark the occasion by holding a Cabinet Meeting in Sunderland. This was partly because Sunderland was the first place to vote to Leave in the referendum on 23rd June 2016. However, it was also a symbol of the intention of this Government to be a Government for the whole country, not just for London and the South East.
Many former Labour voters across the country, including many whom I spoke to during the election campaign in Midsomer Norton and Radstock, put their trust in the Conservative Party for the first time. It is vital that we honour this trust. We will never take their support for granted and will work flat-out to prove them right in voting for us this time, and to earn their support in the future.
A key part of the Prime Minister’s speech on 31st January was about levelling up the UK. Making sure that your chance to succeed in life does not depend on which part of the country you grow up in. Spending money on the areas which have been underfunded and have felt left behind for decades. Ensuring good transport links to enable regional economies to flourish.
Taking back control of our borders, laws, money and trade will allow us to forge ahead with these goals and continue to deliver on your priorities.
The Conservatives are delivering the biggest cash boost in history to the NHS, with an additional £33.9 billion in frontline services every year by 2024, the largest and longest funding settlement in the history of the health service. It will provide 40 new hospitals, 6,000 extra doctors and 50,000 more nurses. We have already introduced the NHS Long Term Plan Funding Bill to Parliament, which will enshrine this commitment to the NHS in law and safeguard it for future generations.
Our police force is gaining an extra 20,000 recruits and powers to stop and search more effectively so we can begin to clamp down on the scourge of knife crime.
We are guaranteeing minimum funding levels for all pupils, ensuring that every school has the funding they need to deliver a world class education for every pupil. This will ensure that every child has access to a world class education, so they can learn in a happy and fulfilling environment and get the qualifications they need for a prosperous future.
This is a new chapter in Parliament and a new chapter for the country. The stage is set for the nation to come back together. Energy exudes from every pore of this Government. It will not just be a year, but a decade of renewal.
