The Somerset Guardian, 15th December 2021

This week, the Prime Minister wrote to all Members of Parliament (MPs) emphasising the importance of vaccinations and boosters.
Since the beginning of the year, we have seen that immunisation is the key to beating COVID-19. The United Kingdom (UK) was the first country in the world to administer a vaccine and we delivered the fastest roll-out in Europe. We have also begun the quickest booster campaign too, with over half a million jabs delivered in one day alone. These achievements, made possible by the NHS and volunteer vaccinators, have saved countless lives and livelihoods.

However, in spite of the enormous efforts made by so many we are facing an emergency in our battle with the new variant, Omicron and we must urgently reinforce our wall of vaccine protection. This comes after the UK’s four Chief Medical Officers raised the COVID-19 Alert level to 4, its second highest level, owing to the evidence that Omicron is doubling every few days.

We know from experience how these exponential curves develop and now it is clear that two doses of vaccination need to be topped up in order to protect ourselves. The good news is that the scientists are confident that with a third dose we can all bring our level of immunity back up.

The Omicron Emergency Boost has, therefore, been implemented and the ‘Get Boosted Now’ campaign means that everyone eligible aged eighteen and over in England will have the chance to obtain their booster before the New Year. All those who have not received their first inoculation are also strongly urged to book an appointment so that we can continue to fight this virus together.
